What is Retina and its role?

The retina is the delicate inner lining of the eye. The retina acts like a film in a camera. The impulses are then transmitted to the brain through the optic nerve. The macula is the area in the retina responsible for 90% of the vision.

Diabetic retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy occurs when diabetes damages the tiny vessels in the retina. Anyone who is diabetic is at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. However, the type of diabetes, blood sugar level control, affects his or her risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. The diminution of vision may be due to diabetic macular edema, vitreous hemorrhage, tractional retinal detachment or progression of cataract.
In the early stages known as non proliferative diabetic retinopathy, blood vessels may leak fluid causing macular edema. In the more advanced stage, called proliferative diabetic retinopathy, fragile new blood vessels grow around the retina and in the vitreous humour.
If left untreated, these blood vessels may bleed, clouding vision or detaching the retina.
